We are all superheroes!

Hello lovely SMASH crew, Sam here sharing an email with you that I sent last year before our first superhero themed SMASH class!

This Saturday at 10am we are bringing back our extra special themed class… bigger and better than before! Expect an email from the SMASH superhero team on Friday with the first part of our story and aim to log into the class 5 minutes early on Saturday so that you don’t miss any of the action! It is going to be cheesy but we ask you to embrace it with an open mind (fancy dress optional but highly encouraged!)

This time around we are not suggesting any specific superhero names other than your own. We want to remind you that YOU are already a superhero! Enjoy the following email from May last year.

I am a superhero!

13 May 2020

Hey all, Sam here with a little email about heroes and villains!

The term "superhero" is said to date back to the early 20th century, with the popularity of comic books adding to the interest of super powers. However there are a lot of characters based upon tales from ancient mythology - Thor being a great example of this!

The idea of having super powers - used for good or evil captures our attention and allows us to imagine what we could do for the world, or for ourselves, with such powers.

We each have our own super powers. We have something inside of us that nobody can take away. We have the power to spend our time as we wish. The power to use our energy on positive thoughts, or waste it on negative ones. We can decide to work that little bit harder, or to take some of that energy back and recover a little. We are all our own superhero.

One of our SMASH Discovery sessions once asked us to reflect upon our past self. Would the you from 10 years ago view the you from today as a hero? For me the answer was a definite YES! At the time I was approaching my 10 year sober anniversary, and the mental and physical journey I had been on in the 10 years before that point was definitely something to be proud of. That moment gave me the idea to celebrate my 2019 anniversary with a superhero party! I dressed as a super butterfly having emerged from my chrysalis to become brighter and stronger than ever before. I am a superhero!

What will the you in 10 years time look like? Becoming your own hero doesn't need to stop here. You are amazing, you are powerful and you have everything you need within you.

Don't forget to use your powers wisely!

Back to today, and as we have touched on before, these last few months have really brought out the super power that is within all of us... the power of resilience! Can we imagine that the obstacles that do get in our way help supercharge our powers and help create that strength within us, ready to take on anything that this world may throw into our path!

As Batman says to Commissioner Gordon in The Dark Knight Rises, "A hero can be anyone, even a man doing something as simple and reassuring as putting a coat on a young boy's shoulders to let him know that the world hadn't ended.”

Have a super day!
