Supergirl!

Good morning team SMASH!

Ashley here as Sam is spending the weekend with one of her favourite friends in Italy, lucky her and lucky Federica! We both hope you have had a successful week and have lots of things to be thankful for

This week a member asked how we can be so positive and happy all the time, so we replied honestly - we aren't (sorry!). Just like you and everyone else, we also have moments and days where work is manic, our minds are all over the place and people (including loved ones!) grate on us! Why? Because we are human and not superheroes!!!! This was one of the reasons we created SMASH, to help others as well as ourselves celebrate our good days and learn to 'manage' our bad ones so that they don't consume us.

One of the best ways to do this is to practise daily gratitude. Study after study has shown that those people who practise gratitude every day (or at least frequently) are happier than those who don't. As weird and unbelievable as it may sound to some people who haven't done it before, there is no denying that these studies prove that by training the mind to be more grateful, you will find yourself thinking more positively and will treat other people, and yourself, more kindly. We encourage you to google some of these studies, there are so many of them and they all point to the same outcome - gratitude makes you happy!

Remember that practising gratitude and any type of mindfulness exercise is the same as training your body to get fitter and stronger - you have to keep with it as, although small positive changes will be felt quite soon, you may not see the desired outcome straight away - results can take time so trust us on this and give the next exercise a go...

For the next week write down 3 things you are grateful for - people, places, events, nature, home. Anything! The only condition to this task is that it has to be different every day, you can't use the same thing twice. This will help you to really think about everything you have to be grateful for....

So, give it a go and set a reminder to do it each day for the next week. All of those studies can't be wrong so trust us, trust them and start training your mind to be happier, healthier and more content.... today.

Have an amazing weekend!

P.S. Back to superheroes.... I have 3 brothers and when I was a kid in the 80's and we played superheroes I would always be Supergirl. I LOVED her and would tell my Mum I wanted to be Supergirl when I was older! She would tell me that I could be anything as long as I grew up to be a good person, and that Supergirl was a good example of that  My Mum is amazing so expect more stories about her in the future but for today, let's say she is number one on my list of what I am grateful for...

1. Mum - she is the best!

2. Today I get to spend quality time with Simon

3. SMASH spin on Thursday was my favourite workout of the week - I trained hard and I am thankful for my body for supporting me to do that!

hat are you grateful for today? Why not reply back to us with your list, we would love to hear from you! Also, why not tell us what superheroes you always wanted to be...

P.P.S. I bet Supergirl practises gratitude!
