Push the Boundaries...

Happy Wednesday you lovely people!

It’s Sam here today as I’ll be away for the hen do of one of my best friends for a long weekend (which means a solo SMASH for Ash on Friday and Monday lunchtime!).

Hen parties are not something I would usually look forward to – all the alcohol and drunkenness that seems to be associated with it. However after giving up alcohol 9 years ago (as I’ve mentioned many times) – I’ve learned to embrace parties and nights out. I used to be a solo drinker as opposed to a social drinker, so nights out were never my thing until I was sober.

I learned to step out of my comfort zone and dance like nobody is watching, sing like nobody is listening… because I don’t have that extra confidence boost that alcohol used to give me. Now I embrace a good party, a cheesy boogie, a festival where I can let loose and go crazy and everyone just assumes I’m on something!

That’s the thinking I’ve come around to – it doesn’t matter what other people think – maybe I’m drunk, maybe I’m on drugs, or maybe I just love life and like having fun totally sober!

The same can be said about the gym. Its something that came up in our SMASH discovery this Saturday. One of the main reasons that people don’t like to work out in the gym is the fear that others will judge them. I’ve heard it from so many new members, but the truth is – most people actually don’t care what you are doing… and they may not even have a clue what they are doing themselves!

I like to challenge people and I’ve convinced some of the bigger muscly mouthy guys to come to my spin class before… taking them well out of their comfort zone to do a different type of training than what they are used to. Despite their complaints about my music choices they did admit it was a great workout and that they would consider coming back… It just shows that everybody has their own limits and their happy, comfortable space. Maybe you look to someone and wish you could train like them, but maybe they are looking at you thinking the same thing. Or… maybe they are just looking at their own reflection!!

So next time you worry about trying something new just go for it… Ash and I are always happy to guide you if you need it. Push the boundaries of your comfort zone and give it a go!

One of my favourite quotes:

You probably wouldn’t worry about what people think of you if you could know how seldom they do! – Olin Miller

Enjoy the rest of your week and I’ll hopefully see you guys on Monday.
