Flip-it

Hey all,

Sam here on the eve of UK lockdown part 2. I know that those of you that are not based in the UK have also been going through similar ups and downs to us but we can still get through it together, and apart!

This week, with the help of one of our amazing SMASH community members Thomas, we launched our new look website. Hopefully it is much simpler and easier to use. There are still a few more additions we need to make but as it stands it should hopefully give a sense of what SMASH London is all about. Any feedback is very welcome so do have a look when you have a moment! We also would like to make an audio version of these weekly emails available in our blog section, so if you don't have time to read on, you can click here!!

For Monday evenings SMASH class, I did my version of flip-it, where we let the coin decide what our workout will look like. It is also the class where we flip negative statements into positive ones. The main example was what most of us might be feeling right now "I am fed up of this pandemic". I think 2020 has shown us just how resilient we can all be. Of course there will still be highs and lows but a positive flip of this statement could be "I embrace my resilience".

What other negative statements have we been using recently? "I miss my loved ones"? Of course, we are not suggesting that you shouldn't miss your friends and family. But rather than dwelling on the distance, can we take a moment to be thankful for having those loved ones in our lives in the first place? "I am worried about Christmas", I think is on many of our minds right now. but will worrying help us? Can we flip it to "I will worry less about what I cannot control". Hopefully in the long-term we will see this as a small part of our life story.

All we can do is try to make these darker days a little brighter. Maybe missing our favorite restaurants can be a good opportunity to get creative in the kitchen. Feeling bored? Maybe use this period of time to enjoy the small things that bring you joy - like jumping in puddles or dancing to your favorite music!

Talking of which... I have decided to host a little Zoom dance party! It might become a regular thing, but for now it will be around an hour this Friday evening from 7pm. No pressure at all - we are going to let loose and have fun with no judgement or expectation. As with our classes you can choose to have your camera off but I promise that there will be no spotlighting or recording so that we can just be free - together, and apart! Anybody is welcome, so invite your friends, come for the whole hour or pop by for 5 minutes... and of course in true Sam style you can expect a varied and random playlist!

Stay safe, take care and keep contact with your loved ones. We are in this together and apart.
