I choose to think more positively...

Hi everyone

Positive affirmations are an important part of SMASH London and it's a shame that people don't use them more often! We get it though, for so long we have used negative words in those busy minds of ours, that it often feels odd to say something so positive. Ask yourself though, why is 'I Am Weak' easier for some to say than 'I Am Strong'? There is a lot of science and research behind why we choose negativity over positivity a lot of the time. The good news is that there is also a lot of solid research and evidence that practising positive affirmations can encourage us to think and act more positively. If you have time on your hands at the moment (and let's be honest, most of us have more than we are used to!), why not look in to this before we give you our thoughts on the subject in a future email....

Here are a few suggestions to search -

What are positive affirmations?

How do they help us to think more positively?

What's the science behind positive affirmations? Are there any reasons not to practise them?

Why are we hardwired to use negative language to ourselves?

A mindfulness challenge for you -

Think up your own positive affirmation that you will repeat to yourself through the day for the next week. Try to choose words that resonate with how you feel at the moment (or, if you are feeling low, choose something that is the opposite to lift your mood). Try to think of something that feels more like a sentence - a statement. Instead of 'I Am Strong' (this is a great affirmation and one we like, but used very often could lose it's effect) you could say 'I Am The Strongest Version Of Myself At All Times'. Instead of 'I Am Happy', you could use 'I Choose To Embrace Happiness In Every Situation'. There are so many you could pick or create! What positive affirmation is going to work for you over the coming week? Could you share this with others? Write it down or say it out loud (or both!). Say it first thing in the morning, last thing at night and whenever you catch yourself being unkind to that amazing body and mind of yours. Choose to think more positively (put an 'I' in front of that and there is an affirmation!)
