Strength Through Unity

Hi everyone!

Happy Pride Week!

Tonight we launch the week with the return of Beyonce & Rihanna! Join the class here! (Password: 068902).

On Tuesday at 1pm we celebrate Pride in your body with a special Beginners Burlesque class hosted by regular SMASH community member Amy Wooldridge! Amy has been part of our community for almost as long as SMASH has been around, and we are so excited for this class! Burlesque is suitable for everyone and Amy has this to say - "I’ve been doing burlesque for 4 years. I’m a body confidence advocate who’s always loved dance and I’m here to prove that sexy doesn’t have a size!"

We will also be donating £1 for every person that attends Beginner's Burlesque to UK Black Pride, so please come along and help us send as much money as possible! Here is a little about UK Black Pride -

UK Black Pride is Europe’s largest celebration for LGBTQ people of African, Asian, Caribbean, Middle Eastern and Latin American descent. We produce an annual celebration during pride month, as well as a variety of activities throughout the year in and around the UK, which also promote and advocate for the spiritual, emotional, and intellectual health and wellbeing of the communities we represent.

UK Black Pride is a safe space to celebrate diverse sexualities, gender identities, cultures, gender expressions and backgrounds and we foster, represent and celebrate Black LGBTQ and QTIPOC culture through education, the arts, cultural events and advocacy. Importantly, UK Black Pride promotes unity and cooperation among LGBTQ people of diasporic communities in the UK, as well as their friends and families. In the words of Audre Lorde: “There is no such thing as a single-issue struggle because we do not live single-issue lives. Our struggles are particular, but we are not alone.”

On their mission statement they have Strength Through Unity - we will be using this as one of our affirmations this week

We can't wait to see you as we celebrate Pride and Positivity within ourselves, while we also use the week as a reminder of how powerful we are together and how all of us can unite to make positive change for LGBTQ+ people all over the world
